Digital Speed x Analog Depth

Go fast digitally. Go deep analog.

Improvement depends not on how much information you get, but on how well it sticks. Drop the GPS, pick up a pencil. That’s when your brain starts owning space.

Hybrid Improvement Cycle

From building the plan to turning it into body knowledge, then into stats.

01 / PRE-ROUND

[Digital] Build the plan

Use Google Earth and course guides. Get the full picture, hazards, and elevation efficiently. Build a solid strategic draft from accurate data.

Goal: Efficient strategic simulation
02 / DURING-ROUND

[Analog] Optimize your brain

No GPS. Step off distances, feel the wind, take notes with a pencil. This physical output wakes up your spatial brain and sharpens your sense of distance.

Goal: Spatial cognition and body knowledge
03 / POST-ROUND

[Digital] Stats and review

Enter your analog notes into shot analysis tools. Use Strokes Gained and other metrics to correct your biases and sharpen next round’s plan.

Goal: Objective self-correction

The science of growth curves

Relying only on the nav keeps you stuck. The hybrid path turns information into your own ability, so growth can accelerate exponentially.

Nav-dependent (flat growth)

Getting the “answer” on every shot means experience doesn’t turn into wisdom. You’re exposed when the nav is gone or things go off-script.

Hybrid (accelerating growth)

Thinking and writing from data builds strong circuits in your brain. The more you do it, the better your distance sense and spatial awareness.

Impact Content

[Impact] Relying on the nav can shrink your brain.

Famous research showed that London taxi drivers who learn the streets by memory develop a physically larger hippocampus—the brain’s spatial hub—in line with experience.

In contrast, following GPS instructions alone tends to leave this region underused, with a risk that unused function may atrophy.

Why does distance sense get worse?

When you hit from a number on the screen, your brain isn’t processing space—it’s just processing text. That “lazy” mode robs you of depth and 3D sense and undermines shot accuracy at the root.

Hippocampus activity level (spatial processing)

Based on Maguire et al. (2000) and later spatial cognition research (simplified).

Research index

[1] Spatial cognition & navigation

Ishikawa et al. (2008)

Showed that following GPS instructions impairs building a mental map of the environment; the no-nav group formed the best cognitive maps.

[2] Handwriting and brain activation

Umejima et al. (2021) / University of Tokyo

Handwriting on paper improved recall speed more than typing and activated language and memory regions more strongly.

[3] Physical brain change (hippocampus)

Maguire et al. (2000)

Self-directed navigation (wayfinding) increased hippocampal volume; dependence suggests a risk of the opposite—atrophy.

[4] Deeper conceptual understanding

Mueller & Oppenheimer (2014)

Handwritten reconstruction of information led to better transfer and deeper conceptual understanding than typing.
